How Did Health Become So De-Valued?
Most everywhere I go the topic of conversation is illness and disease.  Even at my “health club” I overhear story after story detailing personal illness.  The newspapers and magazines are strewn with articles highlighting debilitating or terminal disease.  When was the last time you participated or heard a conversation regarding health?  Think of all the doctor shows that are on TV.  Do any of them highlight health?  Of course not, that would be boring.  In fact the stories usually involve rare obscure diseases that we have yet to hear about in conversation.  This country is both fearful and yet fascinated with disease.  We are saturated with fundraisers for the thousands of different diseases.  Is anyone trying to raise money for health?  Are there any walks or rides for health?  If we organized a walk or ride for health would anyone show up?  I believe the turnout would be weak at best.  Sadly our society is not motivated by health.  According to current surveys only 8% can correctly define health.  Disease is what motivates people.  Often patients discontinue care once they feel better, expressing they no longer have time to care for themselves.  Interestingly, people always make the time for pain and illness, rarely for health. It seems backwards to me.  Is it better to prevent a forest fire or to battle one?  Instead of disease taking a back seat to health, our society has embraced disease and willingly placed it in the driver’s seat.  Taking care of your self should not be an inconvenience.
